DILLON DAE MYUNG
The Dillon Karate Club was formed in February, 1986. The Korean Martial Art of Taekwondo, Judo and Hapkido were to be taught. Four people worked to make it come together at Western Montana College: Mr. Martin Martin, head instructor of the Butte Karate Club since 1978; Dr. Don Smith, professor at Western Montana College (a blue belt at the time from another school); Mr. Marshall Summers, a ranch hand who held a first degree black belt from the Butte Karate Club (Marshall was credited as being the founder of the Dillon Karate Club); and Terry Rodgers, a ranch hand that held a yellow belt from the Miles City Karate Club. Marshall Summers became the head instructor for the Club which was considered a satellite of the Butte Karate Club. He held that position until January of 1987.
Terry Rodgers, who at that time was the most experienced person in the Club, was given the position of head instructor. Terry worked very closely with Mr. Martin to develop the club in parallel to the Butte club and to follow the teachings of Master Jae Ho Park.
At the time of Terry's departure, the club was passed to Robin Boyd who had been a member since the club's inception. He held a second kueb Brown belt at the time. Mr. Boyd tested for First Dan on August 24, 1990 and again for 2nd Dan on December 11, 1993.
In April of 1989 a Japanese visitor, Kaz Soma, started at the club. In Japan he had earned a second degree Black Belt in Judo. In Dillon he tested for 1st Dan black belt on July11, 1991. Kaz left for Tokyo on July 15, 1991, returning to Dillon in March lf 1995. Kaz's presence led to a spot on the 20/20 television show which aried on ABC in October, 1990.
The Dillon club has sponsored self-defense classes for the Women's Resource Center, Forest Service, gym classes at Whitehall High School, credit class at WMC and summer kids classes at WMC. Also, for fun they have a booth for the Halloween party that the Chamber of Commerce sponsors at WMC.
On April 14, 2007, Robin Boyd received the most sought-aftr award of the Northwest Taekwondo Association - the Marvin F. "Doc" Has Memorial Leadership Award - receiving it at the 41st annual NWTA Invitational Tournament in Billings, presented by Grand Master (8th Dan) Karlo Fujiwara.
